Frida ha concluso la sua avventura come volontaria del Corpo Europeo di Solidarietà ad Arese con l’associazione Vitadacani, un’esperienza che l’ha vista protagonista da settembre a dicembre 2024. Curiosi di scoprire cosa significhi vivere un anno dedicato alla solidarietà, le abbiamo chiesto di raccontarci cosa ha significato per lei questo viaggio unico.

Hello! ☀️🫶 I am Frida and here is a short memoriam from my project. I was in European Solidarity Corps project in a dog shelter located in a little town called Arese, near the center of Milan and it was about four months long (or short, as it felt going by quite fast).
At the shelter I took care of the dogs and their living spaces by feeding them, cleaning, playing and walking with them, anything they could need and also helped the other workers for example at events the shelter hosted or were part of other ways, including some social media stuff like posting on our volunteers Instagram about the animals. At the shelter there were around 100 dogs and one goat, the number had a bit of variety depending when a new one came or was adopted or if we were taking care of someone’s dog when they were away as it was also a “dog hotel” or such, but if I remember right the number was usually closely around 100, which was sometimes a lot to take care of, but gladly I was not alone.
There I gained a lot of new friendships and it was great meeting other people who want to do this kind of work, either trough projects like mine or running a shelter like this one or such. I also went to a training in Rome, where I met bunch of other volunteers from other projects and that was amazing, getting to hear their stories and aspects and sharing our experiences was great.
I also met volunteers in Milan and few of them I met regularly at Italian language classes that were offered trough the organization. It was great, because it meant I get to learn better about the culture when handling the language better while also meeting new friends.
The project was a great opportunity to learn about others, how to balance between cultures like my own Finnish culture and Italian culture and animal caring and it was also good chance for self-growth. It was great being part of this experience and I will always carry the memories and friendships with me in my heart and it’s safe to say I do recommend taking part in volunteering projects if you get the chance and find one suitable for you!❤️
